We like to call your child’s first official visit his or her 'happy visit'. A 'happy visit' is our way of giving children a positive first experience with the dentist. Many children look forward to their 'happy visit' because they have observed older siblings making similar visits.
Children who visit the dentist before mouth tenderness or other issues set in create positive memories and associations. These good memories can have a long-lasting effect and encourage strong lifelong oral hygiene.
A 'happy visit' usually takes places when your child is three years old, and we typically do not take X-rays or clean your child’s teeth. This practice keeps the appointment short and simple. 'Happy visits' help make future dental appointments a more comfortable experience for the entire family.
Positive Early Dental Experiences
Be positive! It is important to speak positively about going to the dentist – otherwise fears can be created for no reason. Children are naturally positive and only have fears if we teach them fears.
Providing On-Going Children’s Dental Care in Edmonton
After the 'happy visit', children are ready for more regular and in-depth visits to maintain dental health. These happen annually or biannually, as recommended by our staff. Children receive prizes every time they visit Westmount Dental Centre.
We further reinforce the importance of visiting the dentist by giving children positive feedback about how they are caring for their teeth. Children appreciate hearing this positive feedback from parents, too.
