Preventive Dental Hygiene
Oral Examinations
Ideally, you should be attending oral examinations at your dental office twice a year. This gives your dentist the chance to identify any potential oral health issues, and form a plan to treat them accordingly.
During your exam, your dentist will take a close look at the health of your teeth, gums, jaw and bite. Exams may also include dental X-rays, an oral cancer screening and other diagnostic procedures.
Oral Cancer Screening
Since oral cancer can affect any part of your mouth and the surrounding tissues, your dentist will be sure to check your face, neck, lips, tongue, throat and gums for any signs of it during your exam. Your dentist may even take a closer look using a VELscope® oral cancer screening device, which can detect signs that can otherwise be difficult to see.
Oral Health Care at Home
To keep your smile healthy between dental appointments, be sure to brush your teeth twice a day for two minutes each time, and floss at least once a day.
Dental Hygiene Cleaning
During a routine hygiene cleaning, your dental hygienist will perform a deep cleaning of your teeth and gums to treat and prevent disease.
They will start the process by using a scaler to remove any tartar and plaque build-up. Then, they will use a polisher and a coarse toothpaste to remove leftover stains or plaque. Your hygienist will complete your appointment by thoroughly flossing your teeth and gums.
Fluoride Treatment
If you are at a heightened risk of tooth decay, your dentist may also recommend a fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a natural mineral that can help rebuild your tooth enamel to prevent or reverse tooth decay.
